What are legal service organizations? They are private nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations whose public interest mission is to provide free legal services to low-income residents in every community in the United States. These organizations employ attorneys, paralegals and support staff who provide direct legal assistance to the low-income residents of their service areas. They provide legal assistance in civil matters only; not criminal cases. Their clients include persons living on very limited incomes as well as senior citizens and persons with disabilities. These public interest organizations handle civil matters in areas of law including, but not limited to, state and federal housing rights, unemployment/employment disputes, state and federal benefits and services, domestic violence, family, and consumer matters such as foreclosures. |
We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization working to raise awareness of the important public interest work being done by nonprofit 501(c)(3) legal service organizations in every community throughout the United States. We are also working to find ways to raise money to support this important public interest work without which low-income residents would not have access to the “tools” needed to balance the scales of “justice.” |
Working to ensure that the most disadvantaged residents of our communities will have access to the “tools”needed to balancethe scales of“justice.”~~~ |
Legal service organizations are the main source of “tools” for “justice” for low income residents with civil court cases. |

Many attorneys provide pro bono (free) services to low-income residents with their legal struggles in their own communities. BUT, they can’t do it all. |
